This course was created in 1984 by James S. Czerlonka, the course instructor, and was originally titled "Bookkeeping for the Small Business". It was designed to provide instruction to the craftsman, merchant or professional who owns, plans to own, or manages a small business and has had little or no training in bookkeeping or accounting.

Over the years most students did fit into these categories, but recently, many others have taken the course to learn how to improve their on-the-job skills, manage their personal finances, or just for general knowledge. In order to attract potential students who may not be involved in a "small business" situation, the title was changed.

As a comprehensive presentation of the basic principles of bookkeeping and accounting, the course is an attempt to provide the student with practical information relating to:

  •  Generally accepted principles and procedures for recording day-to-day business transactions.

  •  An acceptable method for sorting and accumulating the information contained in financial transactions.

  •  An acceptable format for reporting periodic results on financial statements.

  •  Interpretation and analysis of the data contained in the financial statements.

  •  Some suggestions that may be helpful in favorably affecting future financial results.
