This country's economic system is based on capitalism and free enterprise. As such, countless individuals have, through hard work and perseverance been able to provide themselves with the benefits that can only be obtained by investing their talents and resources into a small business venture.

Each year, large numbers of small businesses are formed in search of the elusive key to financial success and independence. In addition to providing services or products sought after by customers, most business owners agree that in order to become successful management must pay strict attention to the details of financial activity. To do so effectively requires at least a basic knowledge of the principles of bookkeeping and accounting.

Before the widespread use of computers, many small business owners and managers were so busy overseeing day-to-day sales or production activities that comprehensive financial information was scrutinized only once a year, when income tax returns were prepared as required by law. The degree of success (or failure) was then measured by the results shown on those tax returns.

The overwhelming acceptance of the personal computer as a vital business tool has emphasized the importance placed upon the need for timely, accurate, recording and interpreting of financial activity. Proof of this lies in the fact that many millions of dollars are spent annually by businesses of all sizes to attract and employ skilled bookkeepers, clerks, accountants and managers. More money is then spent to provide them with sophisticated office equipment and specialized training to help them perform their duties more efficiently.

The reason for this huge investment is that owners and managers realize that they must have prompt access to current and accurate financial information in order to make the important decisions that ultimately determine the company's success or failure.

Accountants, bookkeepers, lawyers and consultants have spent years learning and perfecting their professional skills. This Bookkeeping for Beginners course is certainly not intended to minimize or replace the need for their services, but rather, it is an attempt to provide the student with practical information on how to obtain the maximum benefit from the services that they provide.

It is my sincere hope that you will benefit from what is learned and ultimately you will find that key to financial success and independence.

                                                            Good Luck!
